Long-term storage for security cameras

Security Footage That Outlasts the Recorder

Most recorders overwrite old footage as their disks fill. CamVue gives recordings a home beyond the box: send footage in, choose how long each video stays, and find it by camera when you need it.

Footage keptNo limit month to month

Keep footage until you delete it, or choose a 12- or 24-month plan, which costs less.

Archives are standard HEVC video. Many players play it; some browsers and older players do not.

How CamVue works

From Recorder to Archive

Footage moves through four stages. We show you exactly which stage every recording is in, and never label pending work as finished.

  1. 01

    Send footage

Have cameras and NVRs send recordings automatically over FTP, FTPS, or SFTP, or upload exports from your browser.

  2. 02

    Check it in

Each file is read on our side: duration, resolution, and a checksum, so you know exactly what arrived.

  3. 03

    Compress & verify

Each recording is re-encoded into a compact H.265 archive. Before calling a recording archived, we check that every frame and timestamp the encoder received is in the archive.

  4. 04

    Get it back

Find a recording by camera and download it as an ordinary video file.

Built for the long view

Everything Footage Needs to Stay Useful

Long-term storage is only worth paying for if you can find the recording and play it when it matters.

Browser uploads

Drop in exported MP4, MOV, MKV, AVI, WebM, MPEG, or transport-stream files.

Recorder exports

Point every camera and NVR at ftp.camvue.net with a workspace login, over FTPS, SFTP, or plain FTP. Plain FTP is not encrypted. Each camera and channel appears on its own.

Retention per recording

New uploads are kept as long as your plan allows. Set a shorter default, or shorten any recording.

Organized by camera

Name each camera and site, then filter your library down to the footage you need.

Private workspaces

Every request is checked on the server against the workspace that owns the footage. Footage is encrypted at rest.

Verified archives

An archive only counts once it passes a packet-level check of its frames and timestamps. It is not a forensic copy.

Retention

Keep It as Long as You Need

On the month-to-month plan, footage stays until you delete it. On a 12- or 24-month plan, each camera keeps its latest 12 or 24 months of footage. New uploads are kept for as long as your plan allows; set a shorter default for your workspace or remove any recording early. Shortening asks first, because expired footage is deleted.

  • The clock starts when CamVue accepts the file, not from a camera’s clock, which may be wrong.
  • Changing the default only affects new uploads. Existing footage changes only when you say so.
  • Need footage for more than 24 months? The month-to-month plan keeps it until you delete it, with no term.

Your footage

What Happens to Your Footage

Keeping footage for years at a sensible price involves trade-offs. Here they are in plain terms.

Compressed, with some loss of quality

We re-encode every recording into a compact H.265 (HEVC) archive, a small fraction of the original’s size. Compression is lossy: archives look softer than the original, most noticeably in fine detail and fast movement. Fine detail may be lost: a face or a license plate that is readable on the original may not be readable in the archive. CamVue is not an evidence system. How much space it saves depends on the footage. If the original has audio, the archive keeps it, re-encoded to AAC at 64 kb/s.

Originals are deleted once the archive checks out

Before we delete an original, we check that every frame and timestamp the encoder received is in the archive, and that the encoder received the source’s frames, with a small allowance for corrupt packets. We also fully decode the first recording from each camera. This is not a picture or audio comparison, and it is not a forensic check. Until the check passes, the recording shows as pending. After the check, we delete the original. We cannot restore it. Archives are lossy and are not forensic copies, so keep your own copy of anything you may need as evidence.

AI may be part of the process

We may use AI to compress your footage and to provide additional features. We don’t use your footage to train AI models.

Stored in the US, with no separate backup

We store footage in the United States, on encrypted storage kept in more than one data center. That is live replication, not a backup. We do not keep a separate backup of footage, and we cannot restore footage after it is deleted. We encrypt footage at rest. We encrypt browser uploads and sign-in in transit, and uploads over FTPS and SFTP are encrypted in transit. Plain FTP is not: it sends the login and the video unencrypted. We offer it only because most cameras support nothing else.

Pricing

One Price per Camera

Each camera has one monthly price, set by its resolution and how long its footage is kept. Keep footage until you delete it, month to month with no term, or choose a 12- or 24-month plan for less: pay a year or more up front for the base price, or month to month for 20% more. Try it free for 14 days with no card needed. Nothing is charged until the trial ends, and yearly and two-year plans are billed at the end of the trial.

Prices are per camera at up to 30 frames per second. A camera is billed once one of its recordings is archived. Cameras and NVR channels we detect in FTP uploads are added and billed automatically, up to 64 new cameras per workspace per day. Two-year plans renew one year at a time. Cameras above 12 MP or 30 fps are priced on request; until then they are charged the 12 MP price.

Questions

Straight Answers

What to know before you send us your footage.

What comes with a workspace?

Your own address (like yourteam.camvue.net) where your team adds cameras and sites, uploads recordings, sets retention, and downloads any recording. People sign in with passkeys, not passwords. Camera uploads use a separate workspace FTP login. Prefer FTPS or SFTP: plain FTP does not encrypt the video or the login.

Where is my footage stored?

We store footage in the United States, on encrypted storage kept in more than one data center. That is live replication, not a backup. We do not keep a separate backup of footage, and we cannot restore footage after it is deleted.

Is compression lossless?

No. Archives are re-encoded with H.265 at a much lower bitrate, so there is a loss of quality, most visible in fine detail and fast movement. A face or a license plate that is readable on the original may not be readable in the archive. Savings depend on the footage, so we won’t promise a fixed ratio. Before we delete an original, we check that every frame and timestamp the encoder received is in the archive, and that the encoder received the source’s frames, with a small allowance for corrupt packets. We also fully decode the first recording from each camera. This is not a picture or audio comparison, and it is not a forensic check. After the check, we delete the original. We cannot restore it. Archives are lossy and are not forensic copies, so keep your own copy of anything you may need as evidence. If you cannot afford to lose a recording, keep your own copy outside CamVue. If a recording may be needed in a legal matter, email legal@camvue.net before it is deleted, and see the Terms.

Can I play the archives?

Archives are H.265 (HEVC). Many modern players play them. Some browsers and older players do not, and we do not promise that yours can. If you need a format your player will open, keep the original or convert the download. An H.264 download is not part of the service today.

Can my NVR send recordings automatically?

Yes. Point your cameras and NVRs at ftp.camvue.net with a workspace login, and recordings arrive without anyone exporting them by hand. Each camera, and each channel of an NVR, shows up as its own camera automatically; rename them whenever you like. Use SFTP or FTPS (FTP over TLS) where your camera offers them, because those are encrypted. Plain FTP works for cameras that support nothing else, but it sends the login and the video unencrypted. You can add several logins and revoke any of them. New cameras and channels are billed automatically, up to 64 new cameras per workspace per day. You can also upload files yourself with any FTP or SFTP client.

How does the free trial work?

Every new workspace gets 14 days free, counted from when you create it. You can add up to 10 cameras and you don’t need a card. Choose a plan any time during the trial and add a card; you aren’t charged until the trial ends, and then the plan’s regular price applies. If the trial ends without a plan, uploads stop, but the footage you uploaded is kept and you can still view and download it.

Can I keep footage longer than 24 months?

Yes. On the month-to-month plan, footage is kept until you delete it or end your subscription, with no term. On the 12- and 24-month plans, footage older than 12 or 24 months is deleted on schedule. Deleted footage cannot be recovered.
